SUPERFALLS LOW-HEAD CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS
The Superfalls pumps are your best choice for a centrifugal pump for your pond. Consider the following: Lower noise levels, lower initial cost, lower energy consumption, 2" inlets and outlets give higher flow rates, and greater energy cost savings... all point to Superfalls as the pump of choice for your next pump! See how much money Superfalls pumps can save you!
SUPERFALLS LOW HEAD CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS: KOI JOY has energy efficient centrifugal pumps available in our exclusive 115 -183 gpm series of Super-Energy-Efficient (low head) pumps. These pumps are extremely energy efficient, with GPA (gallons/amp) efficiency ratings of 20-45. This means that when you select one of our Superfalls pumps for your pond, aquaculture system, lap pool, or any other water recirculating system, you will get the maximum flow possible at the lowest operating cost possible! Our KJ11000LHC model draws less current and pumps more water than almost any other pond pump available. And best of all, this model is flow adjustable with a 2 inch flow control valve that can be shipped with the pump for additional $19.99! This pump is truly a one pump fits all ponds! Low head pumps such as these are perfect for use from 0-14 ft head and flow can be reduced to make any waterfall look and sound perfect!
New!
Now available, our SF5000LHC-PSC and our SF7000LHC-PSC Models of SuperFalls pumps. The PSC designation denotes a shorter, very reliable, PSC type motor, operating with 15% less power (due to less flow) and fitting into a smaller space (more than 2 inches shorter) than the standard model of pump using a standard 48 frame split phase motor. For a discussion on motor types, advantages, etc. Check out our motor discussion below.
NEW HIGHER FLOW , LOWER HEAD PUMP! KJ17000VLH AVAILABLE SOON! Maximum flows up to 275 GPM or more!
Note: This pump is also available in a 2 speed, medium head version, which pumps 450 gpm on high speed at 18 ft of head, and 275 gpm at 1-2 ft high on low speed!
Choose the KJ11000LHC model for all sizes of ponds. For smaller ponds, reduce the flow as needed with the 2" flow control valve that can be ordered with the pump for $19.99.This valve makes it easy to adjust the pumps flow from high to low flow as needed. This model of pump has a shut off head (elevation of no flow) of 18 feet. Use the KJ11000LHC with total head pressures up to 14 ft or less. Use the new KJ17000VLH pump with lower head height, but where greater flow is needed! Note: We can now offer two choices for your SuperFalls pumps.
Currently we can offer the smaller and more efficient 1/8 hp PSC type of motor for our SuperFalls pumps up to the KJ7000 model. When ordering any model up to 3000, 5000, or 7000, simply add PSC to the end of the the model #, as in KJ7000LHC-PSC.

Motor Types We Use Split Phase Motors - Very reliable motors for pond and pool pumps. Uses a switch device to offer high torque for starting power, which then shifts to lower torque (and power consumption) for continuous running. A split-phase motor uses a switching mechanism that disconnects the start winding from the main winding when the motor comes up to about 75% of rated speed. In most cases, it is a centrifugal switch on the motor shaft. The split-phase motor's simple design makes it typically less expensive than other single-phase motor types made for industrial use. However, it also limits performance. Starting torques are low, typically 100% to 175% of rated load. Also, the motor develops high starting currents, approximately 700 to 1,000% of rated. Consequently, prolonged starting times cause the start winding to overheat and fail; so don't use this motor if you need high starting torques. Permanent Start Capacitor (PSC)- Very reliable motors for pond and pool pumps. Uses lower torque for start and running, resulting in lower energy consumption (about 15% less), and because it doesn't require or use switching, it eliminates that possible failure mode. A psc type motor is by nature, more sensitive to voltage fluctuations, and performance is more likely to be affected when voltage drops more than a few percent. If your use involves voltage swings, use the standard 1/4 hp Split Phase model of motor. PSC motors have several advantages. They need no starting mechanism and so can be reversed easily. Designs can be easily altered for use with speed controllers. They can also be designed for optimum efficiency and high power factor at rated load. And they're considered to be the most reliable of the single phase motors, mostly because no starting switch is needed. For these reasons, PSC type motors normally have a higher cost. Motor Sizes 48 Frame - A common size of motor used for pump for ponds, pools, irrigation systems, etc. Refers to the diameter of the motor, with 48 frame being smaller than 56 frame. 56 Frame - A common size of motor used for pump for ponds, pools, irrigation systems, etc. Refers to the diameter of the motor, with 48 frame being smaller than 56 frame. Increase size usually results in greatly increased cost, with little bearing on reliability. Increase frame size of course also means a much larger sized pump and auxiliary equipment. Motor Speed (rpm) 3450 rpm (2800 in Europe)- Pump discharge pressure and flow is directly related to motor speed. Pressure can be measured in psig, or in feet of water head (pressure). Each psig would be equal to 2.2 feet of head (static water pressure), or 10 psig of water pressure could also be denoted as 22 foot of water pressure. The pressure which is created by pumps operating at 3450 rpm in the US (60 hz power in the US) or 2800 rpm in Europe (50 hz power in Europe) is usually referred to as medium head pressure, and hence the pump is identified as a medium head pump (creating medium pressure). Increased rpm and pressure comes at an electrical cost by requiring use of high horse power motors and resultant increased heat. This may result in higher failure rates. Due to decreased rpm for pumps in Europe, pump pressures and flow will be less. 1720 rpm (1400 in Europe)- Pump discharge pressure and flow rates are directly related to motor speed. Pressure can be measured in psig, or in feet of water head (pressure). Each psig would be equal to 2.2 feet of head (static water pressure), or 10 psig of water pressure could also be denoted as 22 foot of water pressure. The pressure which is created by pumps operating at 1720 rpm in the US (60 hz power in the US) or 1400 rpm in Europe (50 hz power in Europe) are usually referred to as low head, and hence the pump is identified as a low head pump (creating low discharge pressure). Due to decreased rpm for pumps in Europe, pump pressures and flows will be less. Low rpm or speed motors usually use fractional horse power motors, which consume much less electricity (amps and watts), and less heat. They are therefore usually thought of as being much more reliable.

||||
Coming SOON! SuperFalls is now testing our newest energy efficient pond or lake product. As you can see in the photo above, it is a beautiful fountain spray for energy efficient aeration of your pond or lake. In keeping with our efficiency standards for the SuperFalls pumps, we have created a means of operating a fountain that also aerates much more efficiently than 2 hp aerators, and costing considerable less money to purchase and to operate! Whether you purchase your first KJ11000LHC pump, or adapt one that you have had for years, you can't beat the economy of aerating your pond with our newest member of the SuperFalls club - The SuperFalls V spray lake fountain. This device is fun to watch and avoids fish kills that often occur when water separates into different levels, strata, that suddenly flips such that the aerated water on top, where the fish are, goes to the bottom and is replaced with non-aerated water from the lake bottom, thus killing all of your fish! A disaster waiting to happen in many ponds and lakes due to inefficient aeration. Simply install your pump where convenient for power, and protection, then run your 2" to 3" pvc discharge pipe out as far as you wish, then attach the float and equipment provided. Install your pump suction pipe to draw water in from near the shore but as deep as is possible, so that aerated water is drawn from the spray, downwards, then toward the shore, thus mixing the aerated water throughout the pond/lake. Prime the pump, then plug in the pump and watch the beautiful display. This aerator creates aerated spray up to 8-10 ft high, with a Vee pattern spray of water up to 22 ft in diameter! You could even add lighting for night time viewing if you wish. Our KJ11000LHC typically operates at less than 3.6 amps, or around 400 watts per hour. Compare this to common 2 hp fountains that consume 22 or more amps and 2400 watts of power per hour. This means that for every year that you operate your SuperFalls pump/fountain, you will save more in operating costs, than the cost of a similar 2 hp unit, which may cost up to 6 times more each year! You can also install a 3 way valve at the pump, so that by turning the valve you can now operate another feature, or get a second pump, and share the flow from both pumps to multiple water features! All the time saving even more money in electrical costs! Imagine 2 or three water features operating at the home in the picture above, all available with the switch of a valve or multiple valves - while saving lots of money. Now we have made it simple to install manifolds on the suction and the discharge of your centrifugal pumps! Now you can easily install manifolds on the suction of your pump for two or three (or more) leaf traps, skimmers, or bottom drains, leading to one or more pumps. Then, you can just as easily install a manifold on your pumps discharge to direct its flow to as many different locations as wanted, ie. filters, uv sterilizers, waterfalls, winter bypasses, etc.
Our small basic manifold, model 10-man230, allows you to assemble all of the manifolds offered below, or you can order the manifold pre-assembled to your specifications. The 10-man230 has one spg port which allows a standard pvc fitting to slip over it, and has three slip fittings for 2" pvc pipe. This allows installation of any of the standard pvc fittings including the ones offered below.
Two of the 10-man230 manifolds can be glued together to form a manifold with 4 slip ports and two spg ports. Place one or more 2" tees between the two manifolds to form additional slip ports as shown in the sample manifolds illustrated below.

Now all Superfalls low head pumps (except for the low head plus models), can easily be rotated to discharge to one side instead of upwards. This simple modification can be done by anyone, simply by loosening 4 bolts, rotating the pump, and then by re-tightening the bolts. If preferred, The SuperFalls or SuperPond will make the conversion at low cost.
The new lower energy 1/4 hp model, comes wired with cord and plug for 115 volts (as shipped), but can easily be changed to 230 volts if desired! This allows you to plug them into a heavy duty extension cord for emergency operation (power supplied by generator upon loss of normal power). Most other pumps must be "hard wired" and are operated at 230 volts, making them unusable upon loss of normal power. Superfalls low head pumps are among the quietest pumps available
Pump easily Upgradeable- Only Superfalls LHC pumps allow you to upgrade your pump to one of higher or lower flow with a simple conversion. Simply purchase the appropriate new wet end in chart below, loosen 4 bolts on motor, unscrew wet end from motor shaft, and screw on new wet end for new pumping capabilities. Or buy one pump and two different wet ends for two pumps in one! Then keep one wet end for a spare to replace the first when seals need repair - no down time while waiting for your local pump shop or The Pond Shop to change seals (for a small fee, we do replace seals on our pumps if returned to us). Buy the required pump today for your existing pond and if you make it larger later, or add a really big waterfall, upgrade to a larger model and save the old wet end for a backup. For a look at the pump flow curves, check out the information box below.
Exclusive feature - Full 360 degree output- Only Superfalls LHC pumps can be easily rotated on the motor to allow the pump's discharge to be directed as desired - up, down, left, or right for ease of installation. Properly directed flow reduces resistance, elbows, pipe length, etc. As with conversion above, it only requires that the owner loosen 4 bolts, rotate the pump on the motor, and tighten the bolts.

New Low Head Mode The Superfalls 10-17000VLH, 275 GPM at 4.6 amps, 115 volts (can be wired for 230 volts, 50/60 hz.) Permanently lubricated, 6 ft cord and plug on 115 volt models. 21/2" inlets and outlets. See pump curves in information box below. Note: This is our highest flow low head pump operating at 1720 rpm, with a 2 speed model |
|
New Medium Head Mode 10-27000MH model is our highest flow medium head pumps, and is a 2 speed high flow pump. While operating in high speed, it can put out up to 450 gpm at 18 ft. When operating at low speed, it operates as our new KJ17000VLH pump (see above and flow curve below). Operate this model at high speed for high pressure and flow, or cleaning large filters, and switch to low speed for the low head, high flow, low power consumption characteristics available with this model. |
FLOW CURVE
Note: All above pumps may use a 1/4 hp motor or some of the smaller pumps may use the more efficient 1/8 hp PSC motor!
All models of low head pumps are now available with the new improved, quieter, more energy efficient, permanently lubricated, 1/4 hp motor (see above).
This curve shows the high flows available with the newest of the Superfalls low amp pumps. Our new model of pump uses a low energy 1/4 hp motor which can be run on 115 volts (as shipped) or on 230 volts if desired. This quiet and efficient motor can be used on the KJ7000LHC pump to increase its capabilities. Note that amperage used by the motor of the pump to generate a flow of 11,000 gph, will be reduced by an amount of approx. .15 amps per 1000 gph decrease in flow. While this is not an exact relationship, we have found this to be a good firs guess at you final approx. amperage to be expected after reducing flow of your pump, or ordering a new pump with reduced flow, but using the standard 1/4 hp AOS025 motor. DM
New
KJ17000VLH PUMP
Use when total losses less than 5 ft, ie. highlighted area under the KJ17000VLH curve and to the right of the KJ11000LHC curve. – Very low head pump with much greater flow – use KJ11000LHC with higher waterfalls.
Note the curve for the new pump has been added to the previous flow curves. The flow curves shows that the much higher flow is only useful when pressure is less than 6 foot of water pressure, as shown in the pink indicated below the flow rate. Use for moving lots of water, ie. skimmers, non-pressurized filters, and other new Very Low Pressure systems. Can be used for energy efficient low pressure swim spa systems. One pump uses 15-20% of the power used by normal swim spa systems! Two of these pumps could produce higher flows, up to 550 gpm, at less than 1/4 the power of our new KJ27000MH medium head pumps. Energy savings with the new pump pays for itself in the first1-3 months! Note: This pump is ready made for new high flow, low power pond systems to be introduced onto the market soon! Keep in touch. SUPERFALLS LOW-HEAD PLUS PUMPS
Select a KJ9,000LHP or a KJ13,000LHP model for those large ponds with higher than normal waterfalls, or bead filters or other filters which have high back pressure. The shut-off head (elevation of no flow) on these pumps is the highest available for a low head pump, 27 ft. Select a low head plus when total head is more than 14 feet and less than 22-23 ft.
SUPERFALLS LOW HEAD PLUS CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS: As great as the low head pumps are, there are some pressures or heights where even the largest model cannot pump. Higher pressure filters such as bead filters, sand filters, and extremely long pipe runs, or high waterfall may call for our KJ9000LHP or even the larger KJ13000LHP models. These energy efficient pumps offer high flow rates with pressures high enough to operate almost any type of bio-filter. For the largest leaf trap available on a pond pump, choose the models such as the KJ9000LHP-T or the KJ13000LHP-T. See flow curve below.
Now you can have that high waterfall and still save money with your energy bills. Our Superfalls Low Head Plus Waterfall pump has unique characteristics not available with any other low head energy efficient pond pump.
Highest shut off head for a low head energy efficient pump! With a shut off head (point of no flow) of 27 ft, you can still have high flow with an energy efficient pump, saving lots of money in operating costs all year long. If you need higher pressure because of a high waterfall or a pressure type of filter such as the Predator, choose one of our Low Head Plus Waterfall pumps.
Largest leaf trap and inlet for higher flows and less trap cleaning! This priming pot has a clear lid and measures almost 15 inches tall and 9 1/2 inches around making this the largest trap available on a pond pump. Our large priming pot or leaf trap and basket have 3-4 times the volume of standard leaf traps which mean less cleaning even under abnormally dirty conditions. The large priming pot on the KJ6000LHP-T and the KJ9000LHP-T models have a 2" inlet and outlet, and after initially filling your system, you don't have to worry about loss of prime. It's built in check valve prevents water from flowing backwards into the pond when power is interrupted. The KJ13,000LHP-T model has a 3" inlet in it's leaf trap and a huge stainless steel basket for highest flows of over 200 gpm when using the leaf trap, or up to 230 gpm without the leaf trap!

SUPERFALLS MEDIUM HEAD PUMPS
Medium Head Pumps - Generate useful pressures to 20-35 ft of water pressure (8-15 psi). At these pressures, a pump could be suitable for use in fire emergency situations. This pressure is available from a single speed pump operating at 3450 rpm (aka high speed) , or from a 2 speed pump while operating at high speed. Useful flow rates are available from 120 gpm, 250 gpm, and up to 450 gpm with our largest single speed or two speed pumps.
Use a medium head pump when you must pump to higher elevations, pump the water through sand filters or other filters which require high pressure. For use as fire protection pump, can provide suitable flow for 1, 2, or three fire hoses if and located where necessary, depending upon which model of pump is used. You must take some fire fighting training for your own safety.
Our medium head pump model SUPERFALLS 10-7000MH uses a 3/4 hp motor to allow a high flow of 7000 gph (115 gpm) at higher pressures. These pumps use less electricity swimming pool or irrigation pumps used by some pond owners and can pay for themselves in energy savings in as little as 6-12 months. At an average monthly cost of $140 / amp / year (charges are actually based on kilowatt-hrs), most consumers can save thousands of dollars by replacing their existing pumps with these energy misers. The 10-7000MH is available in single speed, medium head or as 10-7000MH-2S (2 speed, medium and low head) for higher efficiency operation.
The high capacity, low head pumps are ideal for up-flow filters, waterfalls, or any high flow recirculation system that doesn't require high pressure. For higher pressure requirements, choose our 3/4 hp SUPERFALLS 10-7000MH. or other higher rated pumps as shown below. Pumps 10-3000LHC thru 10-8000MH are supplied pre-wired with 115 volt cords and plugs, and are furnished with two slip fit unions for easy installation and removal. The model 10-9000MH is available in 115 volt models without cord or plug (have your electrician hard wire or connect the cord for you). 10-9000MH is also available in 230 volt version. All medium head single speed pumps thru 10-125KMH must be wired for 230 Volts, and are shipped without cords or plugs. All pumps (except for the10-1200LH with 1") have 2" inlets and outlets for highest possible performance. Replace your old pump with one or two of these energy misers and get more water for less money.
2 speed medium head pumps are available for use with Predator and other bio-filters which may require high pressure and flows for adequate backwash. Use the low speed for the same energy efficient operation as our low head pumps. 2 speed switches are built into the back of the pump motor for ease of operation.
Our 115 volt pumps (up to 10-8000MH) come pre-wired with a 6 ft, 115 volt cord and plug, and include two slip unions at no extra charge (10-9000MH and all 230 volt pumps do not come pre-wired). Leaf traps for these pumps or any other pump are available for $89.99 each. These large 6" traps have a clear plastic top with large "O" ring for positive seal and are easily opened and closed. The LT-6 has a 2" inlet and 2" outlet.

HIGH SPEED OPERATION OF ONE SPEED OR TWO SPEED MEDIUM HEAD PUMPS Most of our single, high speed, or two speed SuperFalls pumps will deliver adequate pressures, and flows when operated at high speed, for fighting fires, or protecting homes. When coupled with a pond, lake, stream as the water supply, we have a definite advantage over neighbors without such a valuable water supply. In order to develop a satisfactory fire protection system, be sure to consider several important factors. 1. Provide an adequate backup electrical power supply to assure continued operation of your pump(s). Obviously the fuel source must be protected from the fire. A good fuel source would be propane from a large tank, possibly buried for protection from the fire. 2. Of course an adequate and large enough water storage system, ie. pond, lake, creek, or even a water storage tank, is a must. Additionally, the larger the storage pond, the better the fire protection system. 3. Fire resistant plumbing system for transport of water from the storage, to all areas where it may be required. This might consist of buried plastic pipes located around the home, with branches leading to other sites that will need protection. The pipe that is above ground might have to be more fireproof, ie. steel pipe with metal hose storage boxes. The system would also consist of the required pump{s}, valves, alarms, switches, and automatic features, panels, etc. 4. Some home owners would like to be able to view the home with video cameras activated via web through computer or telephone connections. Some of these can actually operate the whole fire protection system remotely, if the system is installed at a vacation home or cabin. 5. A water collection and return system could be constructed that returns the water after use (at certain locations) to the pond or storage tank. This might consist of a concrete surface around the home with roof drainage that returns the used and cleaned water draining off home roof, back to the pond for continued use. Admittedly a complicated but feasible and valuable addition to your system if home is being built. 6. Several adjacent home owners could reduce costs by constructing a "shared system" which shares the source, with each home relying on their own pumps or may even share pumps if adequate number of pumps, power supply, etc. 7. Some of our pumps that would work well, would be the 5 hp 2 speed KJ14000MH2, which would provide 235 gpm at 20 ft of height. Another choice would be the 5 hp 2 speed KJ27000MH2, which would provide 450 gpm at 18 ft of height when operated at high speed. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS: Medium Head Pumps - Generate useful pressures to 20-35 ft of water pressure (8-15 psi). Automatic fire fighting systems could be installed, and activated remotely via telephone, computer, or alarm activation. Some available choices for pumps. In general, most of our high speed medium head pumps will work, as long as the flow rate will fill your requirements. 10-14KMH1 1 SPD This single speed, 5 hp pump, operates continuously in high speed, and provides approx 235 gpm of flow at approx 20 feet of height. This pump would work as a single speed, dedicated pump, for fire fighting and training use, and could be useful in backwashing filters. 10-14KMH2 2 SPD This 2 speed version of the same pump provides the same 235 gpm of flow at approx. 20 ft of height when operated in high speed. This pump also has the added benefit of the same flow in low speed as our KJ11000LHC pump, but not with the same low amps as our low speed 1/4 hp version. It is energy efficient, (4.8 amps at 230 volts), just not near as efficient as the 1/4 hp model. Because of the difference in efficiency, some people would rather have two pumps, ie. one KJ11000LHC 1/4 hp version for normal use, with a backup pump 10-14KMH1 that runs at high speed alone. Then there are those that would feel safest with a 2 speed 5 HP 10-14KMH2 which serves as a backup to the low speed 1/4 hp version KJ11000LHC, and also a backup to the 10-14KMH1 1SPD. Note: When you change from high speed to low speed, in a typical electric motor, you will reduce the hp by a factor of 8, or from 5 hp down to approx. .63 hp ( a factor of 8) . Therefore 2 hp motor at high speed, reduces down to 1/4 hp at low speed. This explains why a 5 hp motor at high speed, uses more power than a 1/4 hp motor when operated at low speed (.63 hp or 9.6 amps).

SUPERFALLS WATERFALL AND FOUNTAIN PUMP TIMER
![]() |

Now you can control your pumps operation with our new SuperFalls pump timer. This timer will turn your pumps on or off at the pre-selected time, wherever you are. You can operate your waterfall with two pumps and save energy at night by shutting off one pump, to be restarted in the morning. Note: If your waterfall is the sole source of aeration for your fish, we do not recommend shutting off your only pump at night. Also, you must install flapper check valves on your pumps to prevent reverse flow thru the pump that is shut off.
The WaterFall and Fountain Pump Timer is rated at 15 amps, so it will safely operate large pumps (up to 1 hp), lighting, air pumps, etc. You could use one of these to turn on air pumps at night if you don't want to see the air during the daytime. You can turn on your fountain lights or landscaping lights at night. The timer can be set to turn on and off up to two cycles per day or night. Energy saved by shutting off pumps when not needed, will pay for this timer many times over!
Mounted on a pedestal 15" high, the unit can be bolted to a deck near an outlet (cord is 24" long).

SOME BASICS ABOUT PUMPS AND GPA RATINGS To select the proper pump for your pond, first determine whether you would like a submersible pump or a centrifugal pump. We normally recommend SuperFalls centrifugal pumps for efficiency, reliability (longer life), and ease of maintenance. Next, determine the total head losses that your pump will have to overcome. The total head losses are equal to the combination of the static head height (elevation in feet that the water must be pumped to above the pond's surface), and the line and hardware head losses (additional discharge pressure required of the pump to overcome long piping losses, or pressure filter losses, etc). Together these will decide the pressure range that the pump must be able to put out, ie low head, medium head or high head (keep in mind that the annual cost of operating a medium head or high head pump will greatly exceed it's initial purchase cost). A low head pump operates best when the total head losses are less than 6-7 ft (note that the new KJ16000LHC pump has lower shutoff head height. Choose the new pump if total head loss is 4-6 foot or less. If you are only pumping water from your pond to a filter or waterfall which is 2-4 foot above the surface of the pond, and your piping runs are not to long, are 2" or greater, you should plan on using a low head pump. If your system requires a pump which can overcome 10 or more feet of total head losses, plan on using a medium head pump. Note: Head losses may be reduced by use of larger diameter pipe (2-3"), shorter lengths and less turns in the pipe, avoiding unnecessary heights, fittings, and any pressure filters. Use only pumps with 2" inlets and outlets. Now determine the required flow rate by for your pond. Normally we recommend that you circulate your pond's water once each 1/2 hour to hour to assure that you have enough water movement to remove particulates and solids from your pond for retention in your filtration system. For really large ponds of 10,000 gallons or more, it may be necessary to circulate your water less often. Once you have determined the desired flow rate, we suggest that you consider reaching that flow with two or more pumps instead of one, for reliability and insurance reasons. Where practical, select a pump which operates at the voltage available at the location where it will be installed, usually 115 volts. For ease of installation, select a pump which is wired for 115 volts with a cord ready to plug into an outlet. Finally, determine the type of centrifugal pump required by going through the 3 options below. Major Differences Between Centrifugal Pump Types:
CORRECTLY INSTALLING THE PUMP! You may install your centrifugal pump in a dry box or pit lower than the water level in the pond to assure it stays primed. If you install the pump in a box, you should provide for fresh air ventilation by blowing fresh air into and out of the box. See our vent fans at here! You may also install your pump above ground (limit pump height to 1' or 2' above pond water level). Be sure to install a swing check valve on the suction of the pump, and another one on the discharge side of the pump. These will maintain prime on the pump, and also prevent back-flow of water from your filter, waterfalls, etc. when necessary to open your leaf trap. We recommend that you consider installing a strainer basket or trash basket before the pump to protect it from leaves and trash. You may want to mount your pump on a mounting base or plate which has in turn been secured in concrete. To reduce energy costs and improve the flow in your stream or waterfall, you should minimize the height and the length of your waterfall and stream. Your bio-filter could be located with its outlet supplying a waterfall and/or stream. Static head height is measured from the surface of the pond, to the height where the water is to be pumped to. In other words, even if your pump draws from the bottom of your pond, the water is only being moved a vertical distance from the surface of the pond to the new level where discharged. There may be some additional head losses due to long horizontal runs, elbows, T's, etc. We recommend that you attempt to minimize the height, distance, and turns, elbows, etc. that your pump must move the water through. A waterfall 10 ft high or more may require a medium head pump and thus more energy to supply than a 2 to 4 ft waterfall or stream. We have seen some nice looking waterfalls with small changes in elevation. If you are building a large pond, we recommend that you consider use of two or more
pumps rather than attempting to get full flow with a single pump. Multiple pumps offer
some real benefits besides just energy savings. For example, two 10-7000LH
pumps can provide up to 230 gpm flow for much less energy than one large pump and also
allow you a measure of insurance against loss of flow. Multiple pumps also allow you to
shut off one or more pumps for more energy efficient winter or night time operation. Note:
bio-filters require 24 hr flow for proper operation. About GPA NOTE: Some people think that they can save energy by wiring their pumps up to 230 volts since their amps are reduced by one half. Since actual energy consumption is based on kilowatt hours, and that is calculated by volts x amps, then when you double your volts to 230 volts, and thus decrease your amps by half, you still wind up with the same kilowatts and thus the same electrical bill. The only way to decrease your costs is to decrease the amps at 115 volts as we have done with our Superfalls pumps! |
