Pond FAQS: "How can I benefit from an air pump?"

 One of the best things that you can do to assure a healthy pond for your fish, is to install and use continuous air from an air pump. Use one of our linear air pumps below, with several air stones or SuperPond air hose to saturate the water with air. 

1.    Your biological filter stores vast quantities of  bacteria to digest organic solids and convert waste into harmless byproducts. Higher Oxygen content in water going into the filter increases biological filter  performance dramatically. Your filter works better, and your water will be more clear. 

2.    Extra air flow via air diffusers or air stones increases the count level of beneficial bacteria, helping to crowd out harmful bacteria, reducing health problems for ponds and aquaculture systems. Products like Microbe Lift and LymnoZyme work best when concentrations are at high levels. Both of these bacteria sources will reach higher levels of concentration and thus perform better at high Oxygen levels in the pond or tank.

3.    Higher levels of bacteria compete better with algae for the same foods, thus reducing algae levels and increasing water clarity.

4.    Higher dissolved oxygen levels reduces and prevents fish losses associated with over crowding conditions. With high Oxygen levels in ponds and tanks, it is possible to increase fish populations dramatically. While this is not necessarily wise to do, it does point out that higher levels of dissolved Oxygen can accomplish some of the same benefits of increasing the pond size. This is one of the methods used in intensive fish aquaculture to maximize efficiency of harvest.

5.    This same air pump provides maximum aeration for winter fish protection, even under icing conditions. Adding air directly to the pond in the winter is considered better than attempting to maintain a hole open in the ice to allow air adsorption.

6.    Air columns from the rising air draw bottom water and waste to the top, increasing decomposition the Oxygen rich water and improving performance of filter systems. This improves water quality and fish health dramatically by "flushing" methane gas and carbon dioxide up out of the water. At the same time, the upward air column flow breaks up and reduces  buildup of bottom "muck" which often leads to disease, odor, and fish kills.

"One winter I installed such a system for aeration, and left it running into the following spring and through that summer . I soon noticed that my fish losses had dropped to zero during the whole year, even though all experts would say that my pond was overcrowded. I have kept my air pump and stones running ever since and attribute my success to the higher oxygen levels, and the high beneficial bacteria levels, which results in less disease and greater water purity."  The SuperPond linear air pumps are the best choice for a continuous and long operating industrial duty indoor/outdoor air compressor. These compressors are designed for efficiency and can use as little as 1/10 of the electricity as other air compressors and are super quiet. The smallest two models, the 01-DBL08A and the 01-DBL15A are capable of a minimum of 35,000 hours of service free life, while the next larger models,01-DBL030A, 01-DBL040A,  01-DBL60L and the 01-DBL80L, offer capabilities of 25,000 hours of service free life. Use either of these compressors for high flows to greater depths in deep ponds. Our Largest air pumps, the 01-DBL120 and the 01-DBL150 are for very large ponds or very deep ponds where many air stones are required. With flows of 6 to 7 CFM, and usable depths of 10 to 12 feet, these are among the largest Linear air pumps available. All of these linear air compressors are industrial grade products with high flow and operate very quietly. The 01-DBL15A has an output of .60 cfm @ 1 psi or approximately 2 1/2 ft depth. The 01-DBL40A model has a flow of 2.4 cfm @ 1 psi or approximately 2 1/2 ft depth.. The 01-DBL80L model has a flow of 3.3 cfm @ 1 psi or approximately 2 1/2 ft depth and can easily supply air to several air stones at 10 ft of depth (see below). One year warranty for steady air flow with continuous duty. Service replaceable rubber diaphragms. All of the below air compressors can be run on 115V/230V or 50/60 HZ. 

Choose from the manifolds below, to distribute your air through the tubing to your air stones.

Note: 1cfm (cubic foot per minute) of air flow could operate one of our 12" air stones, or two 6" air stones, or up to four 3" air stones. 2 cfm would allow use of double that number of air stones. To properly use the chart below, first determine depth of your pond and the air stones, then look across the chart to determine the air pump which provides the required air flow in cfm. We recommend that you purchase a manifold for ease of stringing the tubing and number of air stones that you need for your pond. Use the air pumps cfm output at your depth, to order the required number of air stones (1 cfm = 12 inches of air stones).

Our manifolds are unique in their low cost, number of 1/2" ball valves, and the 2 sizes of manifolds you can choose from. These tubes are threaded to fit 1/2 inch brass barbed fittings, or couplers to allow one air pump to supply one or more air stations located on the bottom of your large pond, lake, etc. Manifold is supplied with one 1/2" plug for one end and we can supply you with a 1/2" barbed fitting on the other end.   Purchase 1/2" weighted tubing to fit the barbed valves. CARBON VANE COMPRESSORS

 These industrial duty compressors/blowers are ideas when you need a lot of air continuously or for long periods of time. Carbon vane compressors are a really an oil less rotary pump with easily replaced vanes. These would be an excellent choice as an aeration supply for large scale, emergency or continuous duty requirements. Use to supply continuous air for large ponds, lakes, or aquaculture operations. Rotary vane compressors can put out 4-6 cfm air at depths of 10-20 ft. Use 6" - 12" air stones listed below to aerate large ponds or lakes. Several stones located in center of deep lake will set up recirculation patterns to aerate whole lake if set up properly.

These heavy-duty work horses are available in 1/3 hp or 3/4 hp models, 115 volt, with muffler (all carbon vane air compressors make noise) and mounting base included. No cords are provide with these compressors. The carbon vanes will last from 9 to 18 months depending on operating pressure.

Now you can protect your valuable Koi and you other sensitive household property with our PUPS system for ponds and households. This system consists of a battery backup system with its own battery bank (or your own), an inverter to convert the battery's 12 volt DC to 115 volt AC to operate equipment for as long as possible with your backup battery source. This system is normally provided with our pond aeration system which is capable of aerating your pond, circulating the ponds water, removing ammonia as it is formed, even without a biological filter in service. Our PUPS system aerates your pond and thus maintains winter protection of the pond, even when electrical power is off to the block!

SPA AIR BLOWERS

Offered in 3 sizes, our spa blowers are ideal for backwashing filters. Install an under-gravel air manifold with 1/16" drilled holes into the filter before filling with gravel (see our BALANCE gravel in filtration section). Greatly simplifies the job of backwashing filters (practically impossible to clean gravel filters without these). A 1 hp blower is usually satisfactory for backwashing a filter bed of 35 - 40 ft2 area and under 30 in. of water. Space air pipes 6-10 inches apart with drilled 1/16 inch holes spaced on both sides of pvc pipe so that you have enough surface area (cross sectional area of holes) to total about 2 inches area or 1,000 holes (use more holes, larger blower for larger filters, or larger blowers for greater depths). Air Disk Stations and Air Disks SuperPond now has the best selection of air disks to aerate your pond or lake. We have two models of single air stations, the rectangular Air box, 10" or 121/2", or the Round Air Disk Station, 10" or 12.5" also. SuperPond offers the most complete selection of membrane air diffuser assemblies available. The SuperPond Air Stations features a hollow base (available either round or rectangular) that can be filled with pea gravel or sand.  This solves all of the problems with attempting to hide floating air tubes, or pvc pipe!  Available in single head units, dual head stations, or even quad head stations, you can now easily aerate any size of pond or lake. A 3/4" female threaded outlet is located in the base of each diffuser, then mounted securely onto the box.  A 3/4" x 1/2" poly barbed adapter is included (non-weighted tubing).

Our new SuperPond 3" Aerating Bottom Drain has features not available on other bottom drains. You can install it now into a 3" PVC elbow, and hook up the air hose whenever you want to put the system into service. Liner is sandwiched between the two halves of the bottom drain to make your bottom drain watertight. You can even add air to your existing Tetra bottom drain if desired by replacing your Tetra Bottom drains dome with the RND10-1 or RND12-1 air stations. Prepare for Your Next Power Outage - Keep Your Pond Circulating and Aerated!

What will you do when your power goes off this winter?

Benefits of the APF units are as follows: The continuous air column keeps a hole open in the ice upon power loss during freezing conditions. The APF acts as a small pump drawing pond or tank water through the Bio-lyte or zeolyte to remove ammonia and protect the fish. The Bio-lyte is also an excellent bio-filter media and stores a large mass of bacteria and works to improve bio-filtration for the pond or tank whenever it is in use.

The CPR unit will operate any small piece of equipment (air pump, water pump, lights, radio, refrigerator, or tv) for as long as its stored battery power will last. Additional power can be used by attaching a DC cable (supplied) to your automobiles cigarette lighter, or to additional batteries which can be purchased and configured as high powered battery banks. The CPR system can even be charged daily with a solar charging system (later). While the batteries can provide power to operate larger equipment such as refrigerators and larger pumps, the  length of operating time limits it usefulness. If you would like to be able to operate such larger equipment, we recommend adding a bank of larger, deep cycle batteries with 200 Ahr ratings or larger to enable the longer operating times.

The CPR system is built onto a highly portable cart for easy transport around the house, shop, or even around the yard. Use this system to operate the required air or small water pumps for large fish tanks in your fish house, or winter fish tanks,  sick tanks, quarantine tanks, etc. Use the CPR to provide emergency backup power for your business or home computers, cash registers, radios, tv, etc. Use it to start and maintain minimum water flow with our very low energy water pumps during winter power outages for freeze protection. A little water running through the outside water pipes may protect the pipes even when heat trace is shut down. 

Units have their own battery to operate your equipment in an emergency, and can even utilize battery power from your automobile to extend your operating time. Additional batteries can power the inverter for much longer times, which then powers the air pump and the air powered filter and recirculation system (APF unit). This system is normally provided with our pond aeration system, which is capable of aerating your pond, circulating the ponds water, removing ammonia as it is formed, even without your main biological filter in service. Our CPR system in conjunction with the APF unit, aerates your pond and thus maintains protection of the pond and fish in any weather, even when electrical power is off to the rest of the block!

The CPR emergency power system offers protection for extended time periods, length of which depend upon your planning and preparation, and the amount of battery power (Ahrs ) and wattage of the equipment it powers. The CPR system is provided with a 60 Ahr battery, a charging system, inverter, and auto shut down feature to protect sensitive equipment. The Standard CPR 8A unit can operate up to two SuperPond APFZ Air Powered Filters and its DBL-8A air pump for almost 3 days. Additional Deep Cycle batteries can be added to extend the operating time by as much as 3-4 times for each large battery added. A larger battery bank of deep cycle batteries could offer weeks of protection, or operate additional higher-powered equipment such as some low power lighting, radios, tv, etc. For total or additional run time when using additional batteries or battery banks, see additionalbattery.htm (Later). Upon loss of power, you should plug the equipment that you want to run, into the CPR unit. You can extend the operating time by plugging DC cable into DC outlet on CPR, then insert other end of this cable into automobile cigarette lighter outlet. Note that there are certain limits on length of cable attachment to cigarette lighter, and also limits on wattage to be run during this mode of operation.

The standard APFZ22 units are 22" long, and are packed with our filter grade of Bio-lyte. Longer units are available as requested up to 42" long (APFZ44). APFM22 units or APFM44 units are available without the Bio-lyte media and using our own Megalyte media at an up charge of $10 and $20 respectively. For large ponds, we recommend two or more APFZ22 or 44 units per DBL-8A air pump (order additional unit below).

AIR COMPRESSOR TYPES AND THEIR USES

LINEAR- Low to medium volume (1/2 to 8 cfm), greater depth, higher rate of aeration, more air stones, quiet, energy efficient operation. Longer life, Continuous duty. DIAPHRAGM- Low volume (1/2 to 1.5 cfm), not as quiet, energy efficient operation, typically shorter lived, continuous duty   ROTARY VANE- High air flow (4-6 cfm) at greater depths (10-20 ft), maintenance free operation, easy vane replacement. For a serious air supply! Continuous duty.  SPA BLOWER- Use for high air flow( 30 - 60 cfm) at shallow depths ( 24 inches to 48 inches), intermittent duty, low cost, high noise, for backwashing filter gravels. Intermittent use.
